10 Most Interesting, Strangest Mental Disorders

Psychiatrics is one of the most difficult and unexplored spheres of medicine. A psychiatrist can never know for sure what is in his patient’s mind.
There are plenty of different diseases, deviations and disorders in psychiatrics. Here are the most interesting ones:

1. Alien hand syndrome (Dr. Strangelove syndrome)

Alien hand syndrome is a neurological disorder in which one of the sufferer's hands seems to take on a life of its own. Sometimes the sufferer will not be aware of what the hand is doing until it is brought to his or her attention. Alien hands can perform complex acts such as undoing buttons or removing clothing.

2. Foreign accent syndrome

The syndrome causes people to speak their native language as if they had a foreign accent; for example, an American native speaker might speak with a French-sounding accent. It usually follows a severe brain injury, such as a stroke.
3. Capgras' syndrome

The Capgras delusion or Capgras' syndrome is a rare disorder in which a person holds a delusional belief that an acquaintance, usually a close family member or spouse, has been replaced by an identical looking imposter.

4. Fear of the number 13 (Triskaidekaphobia)

Adolf Hitler was triskaidekaphobic. A specific fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia. Tetraphobia is the fear of the number 4 in China, Japan, and Korea.

5. Working out too much (Bigorexia)

Bigorexia or Muscle dysmorphia is a disorder in which an individual becomes obsessed that they are not muscular enough. Sometimes referred to as bigorexia or reverse anorexia nervosa, it is a very specific case of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD).
Muscle dysmorphia can cause individuals to: - Constantly check themselves in a mirror - Become distressed if a gym session is missed - Take potentially dangerous drugs (e.g. anabolic steroids) - Neglecting jobs/relationships/family due to exercising

6. Collecting too many books (Bibliomania)

Bibliomania is an obsessive-compulsive disorder involving the collecting of books to the point where social relations or health are damaged. The purchase of multiple copies of the same book and edition and the accumulation of books beyond possible capacity of use or enjoyment are frequent symptoms of bibliomania.

7. Exploding head syndrome

It causes the sufferer to occasionally experience a tremendously loud noise as if from within his or her own head, usually described as an explosion or a roar. This usually occurs within an hour or two of falling asleep, but is not the result of a dream.

8. Trichotillomania

Trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder characterised by the repeated urge to pull out scalp hair, eyelashes, beard hair, nose hair, pubic hair, eyebrows or other body hair. It may be distantly related to obsessive-compulsive disorder, with which it shares both similarities and differences.
9. Fear of men (Androphobia)

Androphobia is an abnormal and persistent fear of men. Sufferers of this disorder experience anxiety even though they realize they may face no real threat. Androphobia is one of infinite possible phobias, and as such can be traced back to a specific triggering event, usually a traumatic experience at an early age.

10. Faking illnesses to gain attention (Munchausen syndrome)

In Munchausen syndrome, the sufferer feigns, exaggerates, or creates symptoms of illnesses in himself or herself in order to gain attention, sympathy, and comfort from medical personnel. The role of "patient" is a familiar and comforting one, and it fills a psychological need in people with Munchausen's.

In a previous post I rambled incoherently about unfair bank charges - I asked the bank of scotland to pay back the £1000 that they stole from me in charges, charges worked like this: I was overdrawn by anything between £1.00 - £20.00 (as I rarely have more than that & a girls gotta eat), each time that happened, they made a charge of £39.00.....this led up to a total of £1020.00, a lot of moolah for a mullet like me! That was ages ago......I've made several phone calls and am stuck with an earworm courtesy of some failed musician.....................today I got a letter from the bank, they are refundung more than i asked for! I can't believe it? I'm stunned - usually they short change you with this!

Human cannibalism is steeped in controversy, a subject that both fascinates and repulses.

Many anthropologists argue that cannibalism is an instinctive part of human nature - that it was an institution in many, if not all, ancient cultures; that people will turn to cannibalism without reservation in a survival situation; and that our very bones are imprinted with evidence that we are creatures who eat our own.

Other experts vehemently disagree, denying that cannibalism played a major role throughout history. They question eyewitness accounts and take issue with what archaeologists claim is hard scientific evidence. 'Cannibals' gets to the heart of the debate by investigating both well-known and little-known scenarios in which humans may have resorted to eating other humans.

The taboo of cannibalism has been with us for centuries. We explore early accounts of cannibalism, and how the reputed act and its practitioners were perceived by the Western world, and to what extent we can rely on historic sources as truth.

Though European explorers were quick to slap the cannibal label on peoples they encountered exploring the globe, we’ll reveal the extent to which they practiced their own form of medicinal cannibalism back home.

We investigate some of the most common motivations for cannibalism beginning with survival: in 1765 the crew of the Peggy draws lots to decide who shall be sacrificed to feed the rest. A century later, Sir John Franklin's entire expedition perishes in the arctic, but not before some resort to consuming human flesh. In 1883, Alfred Packer makes headlines worldwide when he is convicted of murdering and cannibalizing five of his companions on a Colorado gold-rush expedition turned winter survival catastrophe. Finally, we meet two of the survivors of the 1972 Andes plane crash who, with over twenty other passengers, are forced to consume the dead bodies of their friends in order to survive for over 70 days in the Andes Mountains in Argentina.

Through these first-hand accounts, we try to better comprehend how, in certain situations; the unthinkable becomes the only choice. Survival expert Dr. Ken Kamler helps us understand the physiology of hunger and how it can push a person to transcend a taboo and choose human flesh over starvation.

Cannibalism is not always an act of necessity; it can also be a ritual, a ceremonial practice, as much an accepted choice as praying is in other cultures. We investigate the Fore people of Papua New Guinea, who consumed their dead as late as the 1950's. But the practice proved deadly, causing Kuru, a devastating and fatal disease passed through contaminated human flesh.

We’ll investigate the recent scientific findings that show Kuru is linked to other diseases, such as mad cow disease, and see how the disease pattern may shed light on a shared cannibalistic past worldwide. We’ll also take a look at funerary cannibalism as practiced by the Wari of Brazil, who are reported to have eaten the bodies of their loved ones to avoid burying them in the ground "to rot and be eaten by worms". But some experts are skeptical, claiming that no one has ever witnessed cannibalism in the act - which brings us to the heart of the controversy over this practice: what kind of "hard evidence" evidence is available as proof?

Today archaeologists around the globe are studying the remains of some of our earliest ancestors, and getting surprising results. From Europe to Africa to the Americas, it seems our early ancestors were at times motivated to butcher and consume each other in the same way they processed animals for meat.

We visit sites in the American Southwest inhabited by the Anasazi from the 12th and 13th centuries. Are the butchered bones left behind signs that they brutally killed, then ate one-another, or indications of witchcraft? Could cannibalism have been used as a means of political control, or part of an elaborate rite to destroy a condemned witch? Bimolecular analysis of petrified feces will shed surprising clues.

Meanwhile, in a cave site in France called Moula Guercy, archaeologist Alban Defleur will introduce us to the most convincing evidence to date that Neanderthal man routinely practiced cannibalism 100,000 years ago.

Using stone tools like those found in the cave, Defleur will demonstrate pre-historic butchering techniques that left behind telling cut marks on human bones. How does all the evidence stack up? Could it be that a cannibal instinct has been with us since the dawn of mankind?

Never really thought about it 'till I had to work in one.......Care Homes for the elderly....I washed them, fed them, took them to the toilet & much more. What did I learn from it all? That people are quite content to employ other people to take care of their infirm mothers & fathers ( & aunties, uncles - anyone that shares the same blood line) Was in the same care home for nearly 2 years and can say that hardly any 'family' visited these people.......when the 2 people that did visit the 2 respective residents....i just got abuse for not taking care of their mums/dads properly????? 'cos your contribution was above and beyond duty, like? you paid your money, now you want a good show? Coming in for half an hour & telling your mum that you are off to the maldives for 2 weeks......shame on you!
Why didn't you just make the necessary alterations to your home, so you could at the very least let your parents still be there in your home? To much bother?

It's the same as people having babies, sticking them in homes 'cos they are burdensome, interfere with my financial obligations etc....interfere with my holiday agenda.......i'll come and visit once a month & talk shite!

I've just read Impotent Ire's blog......how very in your face! Then I got to thinking about it..........how very true! I'm not intentionally being obnoxious towards men.....but her blog pretty much says it all! Even in 'modern britain'....much of what she says totally applies! I'm not sure what brought her to that conclusion....it just goes to show that no matter what hemisphere you're from....the issue remains - why is it only such a tiny minority that has some kind off respect for women? I'm a plain speaker......capable of manipulating language in order to score a grade at school/college & perhaps university......which I've always done.

I remember being a child, watching the news with my parents......musta been the 80's.......seeing the Ayatolla & all the people around him......jeez, they looked poor! That was the height of my perception at 8/9/10 years old....compared to my environment, the people in my world. They looked soooo angry.....I had no idea why

I remember the Gulf War being televised - caught snippets of it every morning before school.......so scary - I thought the world was gonna end! I also remembered how different Iraq looked to where I lived - it looked underdeveloped - it looked poor. I remember my mother saying 'novenas' everyday througout that period.

Then I remember seeing for the first time, Palestinians - they reminded me of the same people standing behind the Ayatollah.......the same sorta 'look' as the people crying in the televised Gulf War.

I'm slightly older now.....but nowt much has changed....I see everywhere poor people being picked on - the easy targets - these people paying the ultimate price all the time - a fate worse than a fate worse than death.

I don't think I will ever change my child like veiws.....like: some planes went through a couple of buildings.......Osuma Bin Laden is guilty......lets blow the fuck outta Iraq??? I thought Saddam was picking his nose & minding his own......

That's what I see.......I may not know or express the finer, deeper points........but a rose is still a rose is still a rose......or something like that!

A couple of school boys walked by me the other day and said, 'Aww, she is a MILF.' (I was with my son). I thought it was really sweet & considerate that they didn't blurt out the full thing in front of the child......some kids still DO have manners :) ....I also realised that I'm no longer a member of the youth contingent 16-25 :( and as such....they think I'm absolutely clueless about certain terms......just like I thought about anyone over the age of 25!

Needless to say......I am teaching my son to always refer to me as 'Aunty Mullet' in public!

having done a 2 year course at college - i dont like the way tutors help the already helped!......not a lot of time given to people that are just trying to better themselves...well they were already OK!

Minimum wage is a massive issue to me........like how dare a worker that stands on his feet for effing 12/13/14 hours come out with peanuts! cos what? it aint a science?

For the past few months (longer really - but more blatant now), I can't open a newspaper...any of them...without some black/eastern european/iraqi,,,some other non british persons face being plastered across the pages saying something like .......this man raped a british woman in a park/club/street......or....this man drove without a license - knocked a 7 year old down & killed her....or.....this man fraudulently claimed hundreds/thousands from the state....this man took a slash up against a wall!
